Evaluating Group Work
Welcome to the YSS Group work evaluation toolkit. In this tool kit you will find:
- A standard template for evaluating group work
- The YSS group work DTT for participants
- Young Person Evaluation form – Skills Matrix
The YSS Group Work DTT
This DTT is for completion by individual young people participating in YSS group work. Each participant should be supported to complete it at the beginning and end of the project. You can use separate copies if you wish so that the young person is not reminded of their initial score.
Please support young people to fully engage with the DTT and reflect on where they are in relation to the topics the piece of group work/project aims to educate against. It is also useful to measure the development of their personal and inter personal skills through the project. It may be appropriate with some groups to support young people to reflect on their initial scores and change them accordingly before they indicate their final scores. We know as practitioners that often it is not until a young person better understands an issue or acknowledges their behaviour in relation to that issue that they are able to make an informed decision about where they are or where they have been.
The DTT can be edited to reflect the aims of specific programmes and to make it specific to the referral need or identified learning themes. There is guidance within the document on how to do this.
The project lead should retain paper copies of the individual DTTs to inform the group work evaluation at the end of the programme and attach originals to the child file. There is no need to input data from these DTT’s to Aspire, instead you will disseminate the evidence they provide in to your group work evaluation to evidence outcomes and learning. On Aspire you will find that there is a new individual circumstance for Group work DTT. We have also added 2 Interaction Activities Group Work DTT Created and Group Work DTT Updated. These can be quickly added to a 1:1 Interaction and be searched on at a later date.
The Standard Template for evaluating group work
This should be completed at the end of each piece of group work/project. Again there is guidance on the practical side of editing and completing the template available to you upon request. You can also amend the document if you wish to enhance its relevance to your specific programme and edit it to include DTT scores. Key outcomes evidenced by the completion of the DTT or skills matrix can be converted to %’s and detailed in a qualitative statement that you feel best demonstrates the effectiveness and outcomes of the programme as appropriate.
Practitioners should attempt all areas of the evaluation paying particular attention to evidencing the below:
- The rationale and need for the programme and if this was met/achieved
- The key learning aims and objectives and evidence of this being achieved
- The young people’s voice
- Next steps for participants
Young Persons Skills Matrix
This is an additional tool to support the individual young person to further reflect on their learning and participation in the group. Learning outcomes evidenced by this tool can be included in your report or used to feedback to referrers on the progress of individuals. Young people can also use it to inform their next steps when learning about themselves.
